Violets and houses

We have several houseplants scattered around our home, they are frequent subjects for my creative outlets, and our African violet is now starting to bloom.  The blooms vary from pink to almost all white, right now it’s blooming all white with a smidge of pink on the edges.  I originally painted this with the white blooms but it just looked like I forgot to paint the flowers, so I used my creative license and added some color. In the past, I would try to go back into the painting and add some pencil or pen lines, but I have started … Continue reading Violets and houses

Welcoming spring and new beginnings

They say spring is the time for new beginnings, I honestly believe that.  I also believe it’s up to us to take full advantage of the new offerings spring can present us.  That said, let’s get back to some art! Nature has always been an important aspect of my life.  Walks in the wild are nice, but sometimes just walking around the yard can be a joyous experience.  The garden has so many treasures and secrets to share.  My love for nature is going to be a very prominent part of my art going forward.  I think it’s time to … Continue reading Welcoming spring and new beginnings

Playing with flowers and doing some big drawings

Hey folks…we are still in the thick of an extreme winter season.  Today we are predicated to a reach a record high temperature of 60°F with an inch of rain and thunderstorms followed by a low tonight of 20°F with 20-30 mph winds.  And the cold snap continues for the rest of the weekend.  If anyone finds Spring, please direct her our direction! I’ve been keeping busy painting daisies in my sketchbook.  This two page spread was an experiment in style, keep it loose or heavy with a pen.  I keep liking the pen.  I used a fiber tip art … Continue reading Playing with flowers and doing some big drawings

Pencil drawings and a few thoughts

I’ve been feeling a little burnt out with the art lately, I’m actually a bit bored with it.  But after several long conversations with my wife I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve fallen into the Instagram trap.  I’ve been making art based on what gets the most “likes” on Instagram, and Facebook too.  And because of that, my art has started looking like a lot of art that’s out there, not that the art that is out there is bad, but there are a lot of people doing a lot of the same thing.  Not that that’s a bad … Continue reading Pencil drawings and a few thoughts

Mugs and old places

The pencil sketches/value studies continue. The last two days I have been focusing on tea mugs and old buildings. I don’t like to use the word teacup, I always picture a very dainty and small decorative cup detailed in flowers and sitting on an equally small and detailed saucer. I could just say coffee mug, but I am not a coffee drinker. I am a dedicated tea drinker who loves hot tea from a large mug. I never really appreciated the complexity of drawing a mug until these last few days. A cylinder and some lines and a bit of … Continue reading Mugs and old places
